International Human Trafficking Ring Busted: Ethiopian Police Arrest Notorious Leader and Accomplices

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – In a major blow to organized crime, the Ethiopian Federal Police announced today the apprehension of Yitbarek Dawit, a notorious international human trafficker, along with nine of his key accomplices. The arrests, which culminated an extensive cross-border investigation, dismantle a vast criminal enterprise responsible for the deaths of over 100 individuals, the rape of more than 50 women, and the trafficking of over 3,000 vulnerable people across multiple continents.

This significant breakthrough marks the culmination of a coordinated international effort, leveraging intelligence-sharing between Ethiopian authorities and the Regional Operational Centre in Support of the Khartoum Process (ROCK), a crucial mechanism dedicated to combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling in East Africa. The operation underscores the growing effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement in tackling complex transnational crimes that exploit human desperation.

Authorities revealed that Dawit, who operated under a myriad of aliases including Adhanom, Ahmed, Munir, and Kibrom, managed a large-scale trafficking operation that systematically abused vulnerable youth. His network targeted individuals from countries including Ethiopia, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya, and Somalia, luring them with false promises before subjecting them to horrific conditions. Victims were typically trafficked to clandestine detention sites in Libya, where they were held for ransom under inhumane circumstances.

Testimonies collected from over 100 victims and their families paint a grim picture of the network's brutality. Survivors recounted extreme abuse, including severe beatings, burning with molten plastic, prolonged starvation, and systematic denial of medical care. Widespread sexual violence was also a pervasive element of their ordeal. Digital evidence and further testimonies were gathered from survivors residing in various countries, including Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, strengthening the prosecution's case.

The main suspect, Yitbarek Dawit, was apprehended in a targeted operation in Shire, Tigray region. Investigators, utilizing advanced digital tracking and intelligence analysis, identified over 70 key illegal traffickers linked to the network worldwide. The arrest of Dawit and his nine principal accomplices represents a critical disruption to the syndicate's operations.

Financial investigations have further exposed the staggering scale of the criminal enterprise. The human trafficking syndicate reportedly controlled illicit funds exceeding 3 billion Birr (approximately 52 million USD), highlighting the immense profitability of such heinous crimes. A court order has since been secured to freeze associated bank accounts and seize assets connected to the network, aiming to dismantle its financial backbone.

The case has now been formally transferred to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution, with authorities confident in securing convictions against those responsible for years of suffering.
